@@@ Electric Wizard: Time to Die (Spinefarm, 2014). I’ve been seeing this record getting mentioned and listened in a few different places and if there’s a good skull crushing being offered up I want in, bitches. Opens up slow and ominous with some sludgy guitar action — think Black Sabbath on the purple drank. Purple drank being prescription cough syrup, the strong shit. To my ears it sounds more like an update to old school dirty hippie psych metal than modern meltdown stuff. Plenty of reverb on the singer’s Iggy Pop like voice and some to spare for the guitars. This first song is mad long I want to peep further before moving on. I like the lava like guitar sound but it’s not moving me too much.
@@@ Marduk: Frontschwein (Century Media, 2014). Let’s dip in with another metal recording to honor all the folks running for President. Wow, these guys come right out of the gate thrashing and grinding like they’re on a solid meth bender. The drummer is all up into the double kick dome tapping while maintaining a ridiculous snare thrash whoop and throwing in some octopus style drum rolls. Guitars are a bit razor-y sharp and the singer is in the angry goblin/pissed punk neighborhood. The second tune, The Blond Beast, actually features a dance rock beat and I almost crapped my pants in surprise. However, it doesn’t sound very mainstream when the singer starts in with his rabid throat shredding. These guys are back to the thrash on the third tune, Afrika, and it’s a wonderous wave of angry bile. Check it out.
@@@ Night Demon: Curse of the Damned (Century Media 2015). I thought I would throw an indie rock biscuit, but fuck it let’s go full on horns up ya shittaz! I have high hopes for this record as the cover has man in black with an axe standing over a Satanic textbook and a horned goat in back of him. However, the music is more classic metal than Satanic metal. Aw well, a man can dream of the horned one! Quasi-operatic singer with some pretty standard guitar riffage and a hard rock drummer doin his/her thing. I feel a little ripped off, I came for celebration of Satan and got a Motley Crue wannabe.
