@@@ Mohammed Abozekry: Chaos (Celluloid, 2013). I saw Mr. Abozekry has a new record out on Harmonia Mundi but this one I can access. The first tune, Scirocco, opens up sweet and then gets more serious. I really like the way the upright bass sounds with the oud. I found from searching that this is an Egyptian/French band and this is Abozekry’s debut. It’s really hot, at least what I’ve heard so far and I’m going to check out more of this record when I get a chance. Oh my when the guitar player starts with the descending melody with the oud supporting it that’s about as good as you’re gonna get. Check this music out.
@@@ Jet Black: In Paradox (Self-released, 2014). A friend of mine sent me a link to a just happened NYC music festival and these guys played. I’m peeping them first as Swervedriver was mentioned in the blurb and I’m a Swervedriver fan from back in the day. A pleasant, non-overworked male voice nestled in a fuzzy nest of guitars with an active but not quite basher behind the kit. Nice variety of guitar sounds — some threedled, some cleaner and some swirling up in there. More than solid band, check them out.
@@@ Pale Light: Fourteen Stories High (Not sure, 2014). Some classic arpeggiated guitar indie from that same music festival. These guys add more vocals lending a sort of Peter, Paul and Mary vibe to the proceedings. Very earnest, heart on the sleeve music — not confessional but earnest. For fans of The Feelies, Yo La Tengo, you know that indie neighborhood people. It would be great if the lead singer of this band was named Ernest.
@@@ Soft Science: Detour (Test Pattern, 2014). From the same music festival. Smells looks like it’s gonna be shoe-gazey but with a female singer which changes the vibe. And it maybe shoegaze-y plus other influences. There’s some fat organ layered in under these guitars as well as some electronic bleepage here and there. The second tune, Light goes out of shoegaze into the noisy indie category. I like it — I don’t love it, but I like it.
