@@@ The Dodos: Individ (Polyvinyl, 2015). Off last week’s All Music weekly email. I’m not entirely sure if these guys are from the UK area but they sound mad British. The singer sounds cultured, and they rock, but in an arty sort of British Empire kind of way. Well put together songs and very sophisticated sounds this is pleasantly retro British guitar indie.
@@@ Erase Errata: Lost Weekend (Under the Sun, 2014) A local legend in San Franciso I saw these guys nabbing the record of the week out at Aquarius Records. And while I was in the middle of a pretty staid diet of corporate All Music releases I had to bump these guys up because they have to tolerate all the awful tech assholes that are in the midst of ruining San Francisco. I say get this record and go vomit on a Google bus or a Yahoo rickshaw. Their Beats blurb namechecks the Minutemen who I love, but I also hear generous helpings of Devo and Pere Ubu. Angular, nerd rock with muscle and a female singer. I also hear some psych/garage influences goin on. I’m gonna check this record out more when I have the time.
@@@ Ne-Yo: Non-Fiction (Motown/Capitol, 2015). Also off last week’s All Music email. The first tune, Run, is a r&b jam with some hip hop interludes — the vibe here is tough and sexy. The second tune is more like a quirky Prince ballad. He’s workin his falsetto loverboy voice. Production is slick and he’s a blend of Michael Jackson without the freakiness, with a bit of Prince and a pube of Justin Timberlake’s sexy thang. If that appeals to you have at it. They should have released this record around Valentine’s Day as it’s all about the Horny.
@@@ Govt. Mule with Jon Scofield (Evil Teen, 2015). A jam band record with a jazz guitarist added. A little fusion, a little Allman Brothers, a little dirty hippie spice bag. Excellent guitar tones, a lot of jamming. This isn’t really my cup of tea but if you’re up for some extended guitar and keyboard jammin’, well here you go.
