@@@ Ought: Once More With Feeling (Constellation, 2014). #13 on the Stolling Rone best of 2014. Duder has a bit of an odd voice, not sure what’s going on. It’s not bad, just weird and a bit affected. I like the chill organ.that adds to the opener, Pill, but the second tune gets whips a bit of an indie rock shitty. I’m liking this EP less as it moves on so it’s the holidays and I don’t want to wail on this too much, but I think the singer is the main problem here for me.
@@@ Charli XCX: Gold Coins (Atlantic, 2014). A single tune from another funky white girl that was on the Rolling Stone list. Wow, another song extolling the virtues of materialism! Just what we need now — let’s hope her private plane doesn’t have a computer malfunction and whirl and drop to the earth. Big shopping mall pop rock production, stupid lyrics. Gold coins everywhere, dollars up in the air, it’s a billionaire’s love affair!!!!! Fuck me.
http://youtu.be/t7G3I_-IrBQJust a quick interlude — I was going to continue with the Rolling Stone best of list, but from records 10-1 it was just shit. I mean, U2’s free biscuit, record of the year. Somebody blew somebody to get that slot. Shameful.
@@@ Wretched: Cannibal (Victory, 2014). #13 on the Metal Descent list. Ooo, this is some battering shit. A delicate blend of thrash, power chord beatdown and a pissed, pissed singer. I hope the drummer has a gym membership, he’s working hard back there. Also some technical metal going on here, I do like a well balanced metal record the way I like a good taco. Not too salty, not too tangy, some good beans/cheese action, you dig? These guys are a solid combo of muscle with tight arrangements and occasional flashes of melody. The fourth tune, Thin Skinned, is a friction’ metal clinic, that’s some shit. Clipped below for your earholes.
@@@ Allegaeon: Elements of the Infinite (Metal Blade, 2014). #2 on Metal Descent’s best metal of 2014. Oh, this one is gonna be epic. Orchestral strings, angel choir, full old school guitar shred. After that extended operatic intro, some of the garnish fades away to a pretty tough caveman-esque singer in a pretty classic metal milieu. Oh yeah, fancy words for the holidays. It’s okay, I’m not super feeling this, it sounds a bit nerdy for me. Mo fluffy epic than crush.
