@@@ Spacesuits: Spacesuits (Urbnet, 2014).  #1 on the CFUV weekly playlist.  Opens up kind of Wu-ey.  A couple of lower register MCs with some stony blurps and RZA style beats.  The flow is urgent, but lyrics are more left field than hardcore.  I like the production on this record — trippy and funky works for me.  There’s a significant number of space references — tune titles like Uncharted and Meteor so they’re on a sort of Sun Ra/George Clinton astro-funk trip.  High quality.

@@@ Pierre Kwenders: Le Dernier Empereur Bantou (Bonsound Records, 2014).  Also off the CFUV weekly email.  Opens up with a lot of electronic sounds with African vocal harmonizing.  Synth blurps, drum machine hand claps, pong sounds, and tricked out singing.  Quite a contrast.  The second tune retains significant electronic sounds but seems to sport a drummer and is a bit less jarring.  I like jarring.  Oh, he gets into some mashing on the third tune, Mardi Gras — a bit electronic, some dirty blues sounds and the African singing — sweet.  That tune is clipped below.

@@@  Cobalt Cranes: Days in the Sun (Lollipop, 2014).  A mashup of a bunch of influences on this record I got to via a music publicist.  A little bit of grunge, some old school harmonizing, a bit of psych all blenderated.  Male singer in the opener, dreamy female in the second so that lends some dimension to the record.  I’m noticing how good the record sounds more than I’m feeling the songs.

@@@ Communions: Love Stand Still (Tough Love, 2014).  The first thing you notice about this band is how young they are — I’m guessing pubes only recently made their appearance in this outfit.  Well, welcome to the big music toilet, motherfuckers.  This is a melodic indie tune with a big tablespoon of twee.  Shiny REM style arpeggiated guitars, but softer than R.E.M. if that’s possible.
