@@@ Githead: Not Coming Down (Swim, 2014). Some heavy prog-ness I got to via music publicist. Thick string-y bass with sparse yet epic guitars. Think Jane’s Addiction with nerd glasses. Detached voice floating over the big rock, extending the blissed/stoned feel of the Peripheral One. Also Smashing Pumpkins duder and his bald weenie pate. I was hoping for some sort of crashing crescendo type thing but I got more of a waiting for Godot groove.
@@@ Keroscene: Cotton Candy (Not sure, 2014). Also from a very giving music publicist email. Slotted as a noise rock outfit out of London, I’m thinking they sound more like dour Brit slow rockers but not shoegazers. The singer has the great misfortune to sound more than a bit like the mighty douche o’ Coldplay without the extra serving of meaningful. Oh there’s a nice guitar crush — more Nirvana than My Bloody Valentine but you take what you can get these days. Times is tough. Also has a bit of that Bush aftertaste — neither the George W. nor the between the legs of a female bush, the Stefani offshoot pretty boy. I feel I’ve done a bangup job describing this — as for getting you to listen to it, well I’m not just here to sell the sausage for the Music Butchers.
@@@ Doomtree: Gray Duck (Doomtree, 2014). Some super juiced hip hop with strong club overtones. I don’t think you could buy blue jeans in the mall to this music, it’s a bit real up in your grill. If you took Will.i.am and you shot a syringe of crank in BOTH eyes it would sound like this crew. Poppy and cranked.
@@@ JMSN: Addicted (White Room, 2014). Also from a very generous music publicist that wants me to hear only the best of the best in American music. Looks like we’re in for some blue eyed soul electronic music. Violin flourishes, some chopped vocal salad and a slick fat bass slicing snare beat. This dude’s goin for Justin Timberlake’s higher IQ fans — all 12 of them! I kid, people, I kid we’re all on the same side. A lot of work went into this vocal arrangment — lots of call and response and a bunch of yeah, yeahs, and some processed stuff. It’s a wee bit computer blue for me, but if you dig the space age soul JMSN gonna hook you up.
