I’m sure most folks aren’t looking at the total recordings listened to the same way that I am, but unlike the first two years of this blog, I have listened my ass off this fall and am very closing to reaching my goal of 1,000 recordings listened to in 2014.

Some days I can maybe listen to two or three things instead of four or five.  Today is one of those days.  This week I hope to get to Taylor Mannequin’s record as Taylor is for real.

@@@ Cut Hands: Black Mamba (Susan Lawly, 2014)  I saw this record listed on the Aquarius Records weekly email list.  It is spieled as an afro-noise thing, but I don’t really hear the afro part.  There’s a lot of percussion playing and there’s some nice polyrhythmic action in this second tune, Black Mamba, but I think the Afro thing is in the gray area.  The third tune, Krokodilo sports some nice, long ass drones swirling a bit cloudy and metallic, but I don’t want to beat a dead horse.  Maybe some of you will like it.  I like it but I don’t love it.

@@@ Sunbeam Sound Machine: Wonderer (Dot Dash/Remote Control, 2014).  I guess it would be a reflection of my own psychic shortcomings but I bet the Sunbeam Sound Machine is gonna bum me out.  It sounds a bit too space hippie for me, but I have a small section of my mind that’s still open so I will peep.  The first tune is a downtempo space shot.  Phased out vocals and guitar.  The second tune, Wanderer, I is more melodic with a nice bass line, a firmer vocal melody, and some synth lines and a classic drum machine beat.  It’s not right up my alley but it didn’t bum me out.

@@@ Painted Zeroes: Too Drunk (Black Bell, 2014).  Some female fronted straight rock I got to via a music publicist.  It’s a classic sweet female voice over a growling bass and big rock drums.
