@@@ Calvin Harris: Motion (Columbia, 2014). Some mainstream EDM/New Age Cheese off the All Music weekly email. Full on shopping mall boom titch with the big synth sound. I’m gonna sample a couple more tunes, but I’m not feeling very hopeful. Wow, these lyrics are what my first grade son might write if he got an advance from Columbia. I guess this music could help sell some blue jeans at Old Slave-y, but that’s about it.
@@@ Theophilus London: Vibes! (Warner Bros., 2014). Some alt nu school r&b/soul I got to via the All Music ‘noteworthy’ releases of the week. I really the dig the sounds and arrangement of the first tune, Water Me. The second tune, Neu Law, is more space age with pong sounds, a detached and reverbed voice and a bit darker than the black hippie soul of the opener. The third tune, Take and Look, mixes in some krautrock influences which I find very interesting. Solid B.
@@@ The Coathangers: Sex Club (Suicide Squeze, 2014). A slack cover of a Gun Club tune. Clean, maniacally strummed clean guitars over a pumpin’ straight rock drum beat and a female singer trying to slurve and wurble her punk alienation. The tune gets a bit circular and gelatinous as it unfolds.
@@@ 2:54: The Other I (Not sure, 2014). Some fairly epic British dream rock I got to via a music publicist. Big drum sound, twinkly guitarrs, some cloud synths floating in the back — enter the super meaningful female vocalist with some extensive oohs/ahs backing vocals. A little Kate Bush, a little what was that outfit everyone shit a brick over? Snow Patrol or some art school rock horseshit. Not the Clash that’s for sure.
You can stream it over here.
@@@ Lemuria: Foggy Smoke (Not sure, 2014). Some ’90s retro guitar indie I got to via a music publicist. A little stop and start-y and the classic rock ‘n roll hook of ‘I hate you as much as I love you’. A little firehose, a little Breeders. Nice guitar tones.
