Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo Bay School of Medicine (Alternative Tentacles, 2013)
I listened to this record over the summer and thought I would give it an honorable mention shout out but I started spinning it about 20 minutes and I realized one thing:
There’s nobody who does what Jello Biafra does and nobody could do it even if they want. The music business in its current corporate cocksucking form gives total shrift to troublemakers. Unlike another punk legend, Henry Rollins, Biafra is musical — he can sing, he can sell his tunes, and his lyrics are focused and powerful. He’s got skills.
First off, Jello is an entertainer. Even if you disagree with him (you can fuck off) you have to admit that he’s an entertainer par excellence — funny, biting as shit, and an idealist to boot.
Add on to this that his band is slamming — a fine punk wallop, some excellent and catchy guitar and vocal melodies, and the band is tighter than a bull’s ass at fly time. It would be very easy for Biafra to just phone it in, but he doesn’t. It’s really a great record.
