Sidsel Endresen & Stan Westerhuis: Didymoi Dreams (Rune Grammophone, 2012)
This is a recording by a stuttering improvising female vocalist and an ambient guitar player. My honest feeling is that if you can’t deal with Ms. Endresen’s vocal style you’re gonna hate this record, but if you’re into her vocal style it’s a pretty unique musical ride.
Endresen sounds a little bit like she’s a mental hospital patient, and I’m sure she is aware of that. I like it, I think it’s emotional and interesting and is designed to grate on your ears a bit.
I really dig Westerhuis’ guitar playing on this record. It’s varied and surprising with touches of the Edge from U2 as it’s very processed and ambient. For example, on the tune Immaculate Heart (track 7) he gets into some percussive, electronic squiggling shit that can really pull you into a different place.
No drums, no other accompaniment, just a couple of outsiders getting their freak on. Be adventurous, check it out.
